Why am I getting emails about "claiming" publications?

Like many tax payer-funded research institutions, the U.S. Department of Energy has adopted an open access policy that requires all of Berkeley Lab's scientific work be made freely available to the public.

To fulfill its open access obligation to the Department of Energy, the Lab uses a system that automatically "harvests" publications and prompts Lab authors via email to login to the system to "claim" or "reject" the publications.

But this is only the first step.

Once a publication is claimed, the system requires at least one author to upload an open-access version of the manuscript and to specify the DOE funding sources for the work. When all three steps are complete, the publication is propagated to the DOE PAGES database and UC's eScholarship database.
